 Common Questions

What is Remote Invigilation (RI)?

RI lets students sit eligible Pearson Edexcel exams from home (or another suitable private location) under live online supervision. It is a formal exam arrangement with the same rules and consequences as sitting in an exam centre.

Who is RI suitable for?

RI may be suitable if the student can:
  • sit exams in a private, quiet room with no interruptions
  • follow strict exam rules
  • complete required familiarisation before the exam series
  • meet the technical setup (multiple devices + printing/scanning where needed)

Which exams can be taken by RI?

RI is available only for selected written exam papers (subject availability depends on the exam series). Speaking exams, coursework and some practical components are not available via RI and must be arranged separately.

What are the biggest reasons students fail RI eligibility checks?

Common reasons include:
  • no suitable private room
  • missing required devices (especially the backup recording device)
  • unreliable internet
  • no printer/scanning method for paper-based exams
  • not completing familiarisation on time

Is the remote invigilation service safe and secure?

Yes. All exams are monitored by trained live Pearson invigilators through webcam and microphone to ensure fairness and exam integrity. Strict safeguarding protocols are in place, and a parent or guardian must be present during login and submission. Exams must take place in a private, quiet, and well-lit room with no unauthorised items.

Do parents/guardians have to be involved?

Yes. A parent/guardian must:
  • be available for the full duration of each exam
  • help with setup and submission steps
  • supervise toilet breaks
  • help manage technical issues if they happen
Parents must not stay in the room during the live exam itself.

What does “available for the full exam” actually mean?

It means the parent/guardian must be reachable immediately (in the home/premises) from check-in through submission, in case support is needed.

Can a parent/guardian sit in the room while the student is answering?

No. Once the exam starts, the student must be alone in the exam room (unless a specific, pre-approved arrangement applies).

What room is allowed for RI exams?

A private, quiet, well-lit room with a door, where the student can sit uninterrupted. Shared/communal spaces (for example kitchens or living rooms with other people moving through) are not suitable.

What must be removed/covered in the room?

Anything that could help the student, including:
  • books, notes, revision materials
  • posters, charts, formulas, sticky notes
  • extra devices or screens
  • smart watches or unapproved electronics

Are there rules about food, drinks, and breaks?

Typically:
  • a clear water bottle/glass may be allowed
  • food is usually not allowed unless approved
  • toilet breaks may be allowed but must be supervised and the exam timer usually does not pause unless supervised rest breaks are pre-approved

How many devices are needed?

RI normally requires three devices:
  • Main device: laptop/PC with webcam + microphone
  • Second device: phone/tablet with the invigilation app
  • Backup recording device: a third device recording the room offline throughout the exam

Why is a backup recording device required?

If there is a connectivity problem, Pearson may need the backup recording to confirm the exam was conducted properly. If the backup recording is requested and cannot be provided, the exam result may be at risk.

Do we need a printer and scanner?

For paper-based exams, yes:
  • printer to print the answer booklet
  • scanner or scanning app (e.g., phone scanning) to upload completed work

What internet and computer setup is required?

You need:
  • stable internet
  • a working webcam/mic
  • a single screen only (no extra monitors)
  • the computer must be plugged in (power connected) for the full exam duration

What equipment does my child need to take the exam?

Students will need:
  • A laptop or desktop with a webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection
  • A mobile device with a camera and the Pearson exam app installed
  • A backup device positioned a few metres away to record the room
  • A printer and scanner (or scanning app) for paper-based exams

What is familiarisation and why do we have to do it?

Familiarisation is a required practice run so the student can:
  • log in correctly
  • set up devices
  • practise downloading/printing (if needed)
  • practise scanning/uploading
Students who do not complete familiarisation may be refused access to RI.

What should we test during familiarisation?

Test everything:
  • camera and microphone
  • the second device positioning
  • backup recording (storage space + recording length)
  • printer ink/paper
  • scanning/uploading a PDF clearly

Can students practise before their real exam?

Yes. Pearson provides mandatory familiarisation sessions before the exam, allowing students to test the platform, practise submitting their work, and feel confident with the process. Guidance materials such as handbooks and video tutorials are also included.

What happens on exam day (simple step-by-step)?

  1. Student logs in at the scheduled time
  2. Identity check (approved photo ID shown on camera)
  3. Room scan/desk check
  4. Devices are positioned correctly
  5. Invigilator confirms setup is acceptable
  6. Exam starts
  7. Student completes exam under live supervision
  8. Student uploads/scans responses (if paper-based)
  9. Exam is ended correctly and submission confirmed

What ID is required?

Students must have valid photo ID (for example passport, national ID card, or driving licence). Without valid in-date ID, the student may not be allowed to sit.

How does the invigilator communicate with the student?

Communication is typically via a secure on-screen chat inside the platform. Students may not be able to see/hear the invigilator, but invigilators can monitor the student.

Can the student leave the room?

Only if permitted (e.g., toilet break). The student must notify the invigilator and be supervised by the parent/guardian during the break. Exam conditions must be maintained.

Can the exam be paused?

Usually no — except where supervised rest breaks are pre-approved as an access arrangement.

Are headphones allowed?

Not unless approved as an access arrangement (for example, specific noise-cancelling approval). Otherwise, headphones/earbuds are not allowed.

Can the student type answers instead of writing?

This depends on the exam format and arrangements. If typing is allowed/approved, spelling/grammar assistance tools must be disabled and exam rules still apply.

What happens if there’s a technical issue during the exam?

Students have access to a dedicated technical support helpline throughout their exam. If internet connection is lost, the candidate can continue offline while remaining visible to the backup device, and the support team will assist with submitting the responses.

What if the internet drops or there is a power cut?

The student must:
  • remain in view of the backup recording device
  • keep exam conditions
  • parent/guardian should help contact support as instructed
You may later be asked to provide the backup recording.

What if the printer fails on exam day?

This can prevent completion/submission for paper-based exams. Always test the printer and have enough ink/paper before each exam.

What if the student is late?

Late arrival may mean the student is not allowed to sit. Students should log in early and be ready before the scheduled start time.

Are exams recorded?

Yes. RI exams are recorded for safeguarding, security, and quality.

Who can access the recordings?

Recordings are held securely by Pearson and may be reviewed if needed. They are not routinely shared with parents or centres.

How does Pearson support students with additional needs?

The service is designed to accommodate individual needs. Approved access arrangements such as rest breaks or extra time are supported, and students can adjust text size, colours, and display settings. The Student Support and Safeguarding Lead also works with centres to address specific requirements.

What does RI cost?

RI service fees are charged per exam paper and are separate from exam entry fees. Your total depends on the number of papers the student is sitting.

Are RI fees refundable?

Refund rules depend on published deadlines. After the service withdrawal deadline, RI fees are typically not refundable.

Are there late fees?

Late entries may incur additional charges and may not be accepted after final deadlines.

What counts as malpractice in RI?

Examples include:
  • unauthorised materials in the room
  • using phones/extra devices not permitted
  • leaving the room without permission
  • having another person in the room during the exam
  • using online tools (including grammar/spell tools when not permitted)

What happens if malpractice is suspected?

It may trigger investigation and could lead to penalties such as loss of results or disqualification.

What should we do the day before each exam?

  • confirm exam time and login details
  • charge all devices + clear storage on backup device
  • test internet stability
  • test webcam/mic
  • test printer (ink/paper)
  • confirm scanning method works
  • clear the exam room and desk
  • prepare ID
